弗朗西斯·科波拉拍《教父》纯属偶然。当时他和后来拍《星球大战》的乔治·卢卡斯成立了一家电影公司，但由于亏损，濒临破产。雪中送炭一般，派拉蒙公司准备拍摄《教父》，找到科波拉。他问卢卡斯要不要接这部片子，卢卡斯说：“一定要拍，我们需要钱啊。”
